is our virtual library of Battle and District's History

If you have read any of Articles A2.1, A4.1, A4.2, R5.2, X1.1, or X1.2 in BDHS’ Collectanea you are probably interested in Anglo-Saxon history... If so there is a major exhibition at the British Library from 19 October 2018 until 19 February 2019 on ‘Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms’ that you may not want to miss. See

Historical enquiry never ends...

Our aim is to make this section a true 'Collection of Battle and District's History'. If when reading the papers you wish to comment or have more information that could be added please contact us.

You will find an eclectic series of well researched papers by members covering a wide range of Battle and District's history, plus other papers of interest to the area and links to other on-line publications related to eastern Sussex. Some are quite specific, others are general overviews with references to enable you to go deeper into the subject if you wish.

All members are encouraged to write papers on historical topics related to Battle and District on any of the Collectanea subjects, but naturally they will be subject to gentle review before web publication. If you wish to discuss writing something or to suggest a link please contact us.

The area covered by these papers mainly relates to Battle itself and the adjoining district parishes plus some a step or two further away (as outlined in red on the map) - but papers covering earlier periods will often range across eastern Sussex and the area known as '1066 Country' (outlined in yellow) and link to national and European issues to provide a complete context.
